Social Distortion by Andrew Mayne

February 22, 2008

Hello friends,

Andrew Mayne has done it again. His latest Social Distortion is now available.

This is a very powerful effect but must be used accordingly. It not designed for the hobby guy and is not possible to work one on one or even two on one! If you are not working for a group of strangers to one another, a real audience, you need to pass on this one. A group audience needs to experience this. The spectator helping you and a couple of your friends who you do it to is destined to fail.

Social Distortion

Andrew Mayne presents a stunning mentalism effect that looks truly paranormal.

A totally random volunteer is selected and before your audience’s eyes, you reveal a thought of word, a name and a two-digit number. No stooges. No pre-show work. They write nothing down.

Social Distortion has already taken the magic world by storm, fooling magicians and entertaining audiences in Las Vegas up close and on stage. Everything you need fits in your wallet, but the impact is so big you could close your show with it.

Along with everything you need, you also get a CD with a one-hour in-depth discussion with magician Christopher who has been using Social Distortion in his own show in Las Vegas. You’ll get advanced performance tips and suggestions including turning Social Distortion into an entire 15 minute act.

Includes complete instructions, full performance script, gimmicks and special bonus CD.

“Andrew Mayne understands my principles better than most. This effect is strong, easy to do, and amazes everyone involved. It’s a winner!”
- Kenton Knepper

“A mentalist’s DREAM!!”
- Christopher, Hard Rock Hotel and Casino

Social Distortion is very fitting name for this dual reality effect and not just because I happen to like the band. Good title choice, Andrew!

So may new things!

February 21, 2008

Hello friends,

Well we knew the Masuda Items would fly out of here fast. We still have a handful of products here. Please, don’t hold out or you will miss your opportunity. We literally waited 9 months for a taste of his stuff and the bulk of it is gone and can’t be reordered! There is no more. Just a few products remain and when they are gone, it could be 6-10 months again before you’ll have the chance to get something from this talented mind.

Check out out new arrival section. About 25 more new things have been added, some are already in stock, some are on the way to us.

Notable mentions:

Finn John & Yigal Mesika The Top Secrets Of Mastering Loops - 2 DVD Set with free Innercircle Card (magnetic credit card sized Loops holder), all in a collectible tin case. The material on this DVD is unforgettable. Yigal did a few of the things from this DVD for me at Magic Live!, he was reluctant to release this material to the public, it is that good. But with Ellusionist’s Guerilla Guide DVDs already on the marker, he decided that the magic world was getting gypped with their hype for Loops. You will not be disappointed. Very nice. See Also by Yigal Mesika & Finn John, Reflections DVD.

Comedian Alan Bursky has a natural knack for making people laugh. Writer for the Drew Carey Show, headliner for Elaine Boosler, performer on Johnny Carson and Freddy Prinze’s roommate, comedy is in his blood. He’s originally from our home town of Port Jefferson and we’ve been friendly with him for many many years. He also has a real life long passion for magic but his career took him to elsewhere. Take all that comic talent and and combine it with one of Senator Crandall’s obscure card routines and you have The Honest Poker Cheat! An easy to learn Poker Cheating Demonstration with multiple finishes that will keep that audience laughing for five solid minutes. It uses any deck and has no sleights. You can focus on presentation. Lance Burton & Johnny Thompson love this routine and with poker so popular these days, how can you miss this one?

Seo Magic’s Kabuki Throw Streamers are in. Yes I know they are expensive. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself. Once you try them, you’ll know why these are so much better than the rest! For the more thrifty, we have Viking’s Kabuki Streamers and Dave Cresey’s Throw Streamers. They all work similarly but there is a big quality difference between all three.

More new stuff! Andrew Mayne’s Social Distortion, Mr. Trickey’s Flipple Tipple Wand, Jay Noblezada’s Muscle Pass DVD, Oz Perlman’s Into The Abyss, Keith Lack’s Parasite (Creature 2), Tom Burgoon’s Crazy Eyes 2, Uday’s Silver Appearing Cane, Mozique’s Decisions, Richard Sander’s Fiber Optics Extended, Hip Pocket Mullica Wallet & DVD, Triangle by Patrick G. Redford, Menny Lindefeld’s X-Board & XBoard Markers and a variety of Mouth Coils from Dave Cresey. You can view these in the What’s New section.

We’ll I’ll be off on vacation all next week, so there will be no postings for a while as I am sure when I get back, I’ll have to play catch up and blogging might not be on the agenda till I do catch up.

Ronjo will be running the store all week & Corinne will handle your emails and phone calls.

Take care,

Pete

Masuda is in stock & all reviewed by me!

February 15, 2008

Hello friends,

The entire line is in house. Come down to the shop order online (will be live tomorrow), and we’ll ship out on Monday.

Just search for Masuda & also Ring Teleport as I will not post links to them. www.ronjo.com

Man this stuff is wonderful! I took a good look all these. Will take a much more in depth look at a few of them as soon as I have more free time. There isn’t a clunker in the bunch.

Check out the previous blog, that I updated from two days ago. With descriptions & pricing.

All Masuda items now have easy to follow English instructions & photographs!

I am thankful to know that all these items have years of release on these. As it turns out, The Blade is indeed from the late 1980’s & we have had it in the past. Too bad we didn’t have the proper contact info back then. And the Two Card Mysteries was from the early 90’s and is nothing like the India one I mentioned yesterday.

Of what I have seen so far I am very excited on all of them. Some are very easy to utilize and will give you instant gratification, some take a bit more work, but none are anything really complicated.

Come down to the store & I’ll demo most of them for you.

Frozen In Time is ultra simple. Very effective. And better than a “real” watch prediction of similar effect, why? Because a photo is frozen in time and a watch moves. This is one of those rare instances that the secret is so unique, so diabolical that the magician will want to show lay people how it works, just so they are not alone being in the know. Though I do hope you will have self restraint and not show anyone, even other magician’s. The secret is just so cool!

Mystery Hole different than though along the same lines as Jay Sankey’s Moving Violation. The hole is a fake hole, it moves, its real, no hole! In this case the photo is not frozen in time. Hhmm. Simple to do.

Dramatic Envelope simple & direct. It is what it is. The actual card selected is the only card in the envelope. No force! Only one envelope. And it is sealed. Very easy to pull off. And in their eyes, only a 1 in 5 chance you could have got it right. But you do! Presentation, they name one of 5 ESP symbols. You remove the only & visible envelope from the wallet. They open it inside, their selection. Literally this easy to do. No hype. But of course there is something. Oh so original!

Awatenai Awatenai requires basic card technique that is taught in the instructions. The prediction & change are highly visible & instantaneous, requires no moves, automatic.

WOW & WOW Sleeve the mark of a real genius. I remember seeing plastic playing cards from Japan (from Masuda?) made the same way some years back. No one had a grasp for what to do with them, though some have tried. It seems that maybe Masuda took the premise for Awatenai Awatenai and the technology from the cards to create WOW? Sleeve WOW is a nice touch. You can use the sleeve as a holder for previous effects & destroy them with WOW or just sneak in in later.

The Blade similar to Just Passin Through & Bill Slasher except for the fact that you actually do cut the paper surrounding the bill & the knife is retractable, which hides all the evidence and the size can make for an easy switch.

Useless Resistance very covert. Lots of hand made work went into creating this. It must take half a day to make one. But just as the effect says, once the deck is back in the box, you know which card has been taken. You have to interpret something relatively easy. Takes only a bit of memory work. Maybe some angle problem on the sides.

Don’t Cry For The Star is very creative. New thinking all the way. Not at all difficult to master. You end clean. Very scary! Maybe some angle problem on one side.

X-Zone simple, direct. Masuda says this is not a magic trick but a puzzle. I disagree. The full deck is in the box sideways. It is removed & shown and placed int he blue box where it belongs. The red box is opened to reveal a full deck. How is the a puzzle? the box is full and clearly no room for another deck to be shuffled in (or it would be twice as thick as the box). No puzzle here! This has been marketed wrong. The red box having a deck in it is the trick. Keep some Elmer’s Glue on hand, you may have to do some minor repair jobs on this once in a while.
Two Card Mysteries, sadly will not be demoing this one as it is usable parts. I have heard you get enough to do it 200 time, which is very nice. It seems very easy to do, some handling sequences to go through but no difficult moves or sleights. This method may be the most diabolical thing I have seen in years.

Ring Teleport great idea. Will work nicely for parlor but up close I would be leery. You’ll need a thin band Silver Ring to do it. Without tipping the method, it is a fresh new idea of an old cigarette trick, yet so creative, it’s nothing like it at all. This effect is a bit pricey in my opinion but you will enjoy it and if you do other finger ring effects, this is a great way to start of a full routine.

Boxing Match If you can force a card, you can do this. Easy, visual. Good Stuff.

F.B.H. (Five Black Holes) Have you all seen those Card Frames with 3-5 slots running through it? The one where a card is placed into the frame and then changes to another card? Sounds almost like WOW but looks more like FBH. Well it’s neither. I totally expected something else and have never seen anything like this before. All his stuff is hand made and this in particular is astonishing. So time consuming to make. This is easy to do and looks impressive. Nothing can be examined but I think in the context of the way it is shown, no one would want to examine it. Supplied with alternate an handling.

DaMasuda Deck No Skill. You’ll master it during the first read through. Two routines supplied. Watch the video it will help you in performance. Effective & Surprising.

Blink Duplication A creative gimmick that I have only seen on some versions of the Automatic Razor Blades and used in a whole new way. Watch his video for more performance tidbits that will help you with the handling. Simple to do.

Ambiletious Card is loosely based on Paul Harris’ original effect The Vanishing Deck found in the Art Of Astonishment Book1 which was later worked out and perfected by Ben Harris in the manuscript Exit 51. I like Masuda’s version because of the added convincer where the selected card can clearly be seen going into the center of the deck & you’ll like it too because of the DVD explanation but I like the gimmick for Exit 51 much better. It’s cleaner & easier to deal with but you have to make it up and it’s a booklet. And the card is still seen going into the middle of the pack (that part is good but fails to compare to Masuda’s version). Your choice. It is a toss up. Still think Exit 51 is better.

Visual Transformation This is the only one in the lot that I don’t fully understand yet. I get it but i don’t get it. It actually is self working but I just need more time. I have a feeling I will have it down by tomorrow. Very cool gimmick. Again, unlike anything I have ever seen before in magic.

Several of these effects require you to have cards signed or stickers to be signed and put on the cards. Be prepared to go through some more Red Bicycle Decks than you are used to and or labels.

We’ll take to you again soon.

Pete

Katsuya Masuda Magic in transit to us!

February 12, 2008

Hello friends,

The entire line (17 in all) of magic tricks by Katsuya Masuda and Hideki Tani of Atto Magic in Japan are on the way to us. They are expected here 2:00 PM EST no later than Wednesday 2/20/08. I am hoping for tomorrow!

Our webmaster will be working on getting these items live on our site shortly. As each item is handmade, supplies are very limited so don’t wait or it could be months before more come around again.

See below for descriptions & prices. Videos of Masuda performing these great effects will be on our site shortly.

WOW - $55.00
A spectator chooses a card from a deck of cards and signs his/her name across the face of the selected card. The card is replaced back into the deck and shuffled. Then the performer picks a card, which is revealed to be an indifferent card. He places it into a transparent plastic card holder. The spectators can see the face of the card inside the holder. As the magician makes a magical gesture, the indifferent card morphs into the signed selection. The card is removed from the holder and handed out for examination. Includes gimmick card and plastic sleeve and instruction sheet.

WOW (Sleeve Ungimmicked) - $13.00
Includes gimmick card and plastic sleeve and instruction sheet.

Frozen In Time - $85.00
A magician shows a picture of a pocket watch which is sealed inside a lucite block. The lucite block is kept in a transparent plastic cover. A black spot on the plastic cover hides the watch face so that no can see when the watch was photographed. The magician asks a spectator to name any hour. (This is not the magician’s choice or a force.) Then the lucite block is removed from the cover revealing that the watch displays the same hour as the spectator’s choice. Frozen in Time allows you to predict a randomly selected time with nothing more complicated than a photograph. No electronics, no complicated gimmicks. Comes complete with picture in lucite block, transparent cover and instruction sheet.

F.B.H. (a.k.a. Five Black Holes) - $54.00
The magician opens a plastic wallet to show there is nothing inside. There are five holes on the wallet. Spectators are convinced that the wallet is obviously empty because they can see through the holes of the case. But when the performer shakes the wallet, a playing card appears inside the wallet. The card is taken out from the wallet which does not have enough space for a card to be concealed, and both sides of the card is shown to the spectators. Comes complete with black acrylic resin wallet, gimmick cards and instruction sheet.

X-Zone - $60.00
The magician takes out a deck of cards that looks quite strange. A red deck of cards inside a red card case.is crossed by a blue deck of cards He pulls out the blue deck and proves it to be a full deck. Then the performer pulls out the red deck from the case, which is also turned out to be a full deck. Comes complete with gimmicked red and blue Bicycle decks and instruction sheet.

Mystery Hole - $52.25
The performer shows a picture of a wine bottle and a glass. He introduces a piece of black paper and a punch. Then he punches a hole in the paper. He picks up a small circular piece dropped from the punch and explains that it looks like a real hole when it is placed on the photograph. When he makes a magical gesture, the circular piece begins to move by itself. The performer waves his finger under the photo to show that the small piece of paper has turned into a real hole. Spectators can see his finger through the hole. The magician drags the hole to the edge of the picture and picks it off. The performer shows both sides of the photo to prove there is nothing funny about the picture. Includes gimmick photo, a piece of black paper and instruction sheet.

Useless Resistance - $50.75
The magician spreads a deck of cards face up. Then he squares the deck and spreads it face down. The performer turns around and a spectator chooses a card among the spread. Without looking at its face, the spectator hides the card and squares the deck. The performer turns to the spectators and puts the deck into the card case. He takes out a piece of paper and place it on the card case. Then he writes a prediction on the paper using the card case held in his hand as a hard surface. When he finishes writing, he folds the paper and place it on the table in full view. The spectator produces the card he selected and shows its face. The paper is unfolded to show that the prediction matches the selected card. Includes gimmick Bicycle deck box, gimmick Bicycle deck of cards and instruction sheet.

Don’t Cry For The Star (a.k.a. Star) - $43.00
The performer introduces a bunch of cards. He takes a joker which sits on top of the packet revealing the remaining cards have star-shaped hole in one corner. The hole is genuine. The magician places the joker on top of the packet and makes a magical gesture. Then the joker is removed to show the hole has disappeared. The packet can be examined. Comes complete with gimmick card, 16 regular cards, card case, a Joker and instruction sheet.

Dramatic Envelope - $47.75
The magician explains that he made a prediction in the wallet. Then he introduces five ESP cards and have a spectator choose one from them. The performer takes out an envelope from the wallet and hand it to the volunteer. The prediction inside the envelope matches his selection. Comes complete with special wallet, gimmick, envelope, ESP cards and instruction sheet.

Awatenai Awatenai (a.k.a. Reverse Prediction) - $43.00
The performer places a plastic wallet which contains a prediction on the table. Then a spectator chooses a card from the deck. The magician places it on top of the deck without showing its face. He opens the wallet to show the prediction card. A name of a card is cut out. The selected card is turned face up, but the prediction does not match. When the performer flips the prediction card, the cut out changes to the correct name! Comes complete with plastic wallet, a prediction card, a gimmicked Bicycle deck and English instruction.

Boxing Match - $36.00
A deck of cards is removed from its case, which is shown empty. The joker is removed from the pack and replaced inside the case, as you explain that it is a prediction. A spectator selects a card from the rest of the pack. However, it is not another joker-it is a completely different card, for example the king of diamonds. The performer picks up the card box, holding it with the mouth toward the audience so that everyone can see the incorrect joker within. He flicks his finger against the box, and suddenly the joker change into a king of diamonds! The card is removed from the box, which is still seen to be otherwise empty!

Comes complete with gimmick Bicycle deck and instruction sheet.

Ambiletious Card - $38.25
Katsuya Masuda brings to us an amazing trick right out of Japan called “Ambiletious Card”. The performer takes out a deck of cards. A spectator selects a single card and is instructed to sign it. The performer then places the signed card right in the middle of the deck and explains to the spectator that the card will miraculously rise to the top of the deck. As the performer turns over the top card of the deck, the entire deck of cards has DISAPPEARED! The only card remaining, in the performer’s hand, is the spectator’s signed card. Comes complete with Instructional DVD and gimmick.

Blink Duplication - $33.00
A card is selected and signed by a spectator. The selection is replaced in the deck and shuffled. The magician introduces a blank face card and sticks it halfway into the middle of the deck. With the blank face card sticking out, he puts the deck face down into its case, whose flap is kept open. The magician shows the face of the blank card that is protruding from the deck. He now holds the card case keeping its back toward the audience. The magician pushes the protruding card a little. Then he turns the deck face up. To spectators’ surprise, the blank face card has changed into the chosen card with the spectator’s signature on it. The magician removes the card and hand it to him for thorough examination. Comes complete with gimmick, Bicycle deck and instruction sheet.

Two Card Mystery - $29.50
Performer shows one side of two cards. Next, he shows the other side of them. Spectators realize one card is regular and the other card is blank on both sides. Magician casts a spell on the cards. As the blank card is rotated, the back design of the regular card visibly vanishes. Now both cards are blank on one side. The rear side of the cards is shown revealing the back design was magically printed on the blank card. Magician casts a spell on the cards again. As the top card is slid over the other one, the back design visibly appears on the back of the regular card. Both cards have returned to their original state. They can be handed out for examination. Comes complete with gimmick and instruction sheet.

The Blade - $24.00
A spectator examines a bill and a piece of paper. The magician lays the paper on top of the bill and folds them lengthwise so that the bill is covered by the paper. He takes out an exacto knife and insert its blade between the folded bill. Then he pierces the bill and the paper with the blade. Next, the performer slides the knife to cut the paper and the bill. The paper is actually cut, but the bill is unharmed. Includes gimmick exacto knife and instruction sheet.

DaMasuda Deck - $28.00
The selected card jumps out of the deck sideways. The spectator then examines the deck, bringing the trick to an unexpected CRISS CROSS ending! Comes complete with gimmick Bicycle deck and instruction sheet.

Ring Teleport by Hideki Tani - $18.00
The performer shows the ring on the third finger of the right hand. When he blows on the ring, it immediately disappears. In the very next moment, the ring appears on the third finger of his left hand! There is no lapping, no sleeving and no pulling. You could even perform this effect in the nude! Includes gimmick and instruction sheet.

I haven’t been this excited about ripping into a box of new magic in quite sometime!

We actually have had The Blade here some years ago. (not sure of the name of the effect or who created it) We picked this up at a convention maybe 12 years ago. I can’t I am very curious to see if the gimmick is the same. I think it is. By looks of the handling on the video, I think it is the same.

We have an effect in our showroom (not online) from India also called Two Card Mystery. We have had these for about 9 years now. They are about $8.00 By looking at the video of Masuda, the handling and effect are not identical, but I am guessing the gimmicks are very similar. Masuda’s name is not on the version we have from India. Is this a knock off of Masuda? Has Masuda been around for 12 years and only making a name for himself in the USA now? Maybe, I don’t know the answer.

Thanks for reading,

Pete
